The Provence / Cote D’Azur region of the South of France has a diverse landscape - from the mountains of the alps in the north to the glittering Mediterranean in the south. A region famous for lavender fields, olive oil and soap - “savon de Marseille”. Beautiful items carved from olive wood can be discovered in the many markets as well as Herbs de Provence and honey produced from the nectar of lavendar and pine.
Aix-en-Provence - a major university city and cathedral town with cobbled streets and a beautiful flower market.
Marseille - the oldest city in France and a busy international port.
Avignon - a papal city with the Palais des Papes and the famous Pont d’Avignon that hosts Europe’s leading drama festival each summer.
Monaco - a principality still ruled by the Grimaldi family, famous for its grand casino in Monte-Carlo and the formula one grand prix. Also home to the Oceanographic Museum who’s director was Jacques Cousteau.
Nice - the capital of the Cote D’Azur, a university town with a definite Italian influence which can be seen in its baroque churches, flamboyant hotels and the world-famous Promenade des Anglais
Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer - capital of the Camargue and europe’s gypsy capital. Once a year they hold a huge clourful festival, coming in their thousands, with music, dancing and a night vigil at the 11 century church in honour of Sara, their patroness.
Cassis - An enchanting fishing port in a deep bay, sheltered by limestone cliffs. You can visit the Calanques from here by boat; deep fjord-like creeks with craggy limestone cliffs where nudists bathe on the ledges.
