For the comfort and safety of all my guests I have a ‘No Smoking’ policy. The original parts of the cottage date back well over 200 years and old beams, fireplaces and original clay tiles have been retained. In front of the cottage is a pond, the original source of water,
which still has the old ‘laver’ stone used for scrubbing clothes. |

Local area The little village of Tanville - 5 minutes - has one shop selling fresh bread and a small selection of groceries. All large towns within a half hour radius of La Val have large supermarkets most with petrol facilities. Carrouges - 11km - is the local market town with excellent facilities: butcher, boulangerie, delicatessen, supermarket, pharmacy, tabac, restaurants, bank, post office and hairdressers. One of the local doctors speaks English and appointments are normally easy to get.. Good walking and cycling are available direct from the gite. However a short drive away in the beautiful Forêt D’Ecouves there are endless opportunities to enjoy peaceful walks and mountain biking. Horse riding is available locally at St. Sauveur de Carrouges, Cicuil and la Belliere. There is swimming in Alençon, Bagnoles de l’Orne and Pre en Pail. Golf courses at Arconnay near Alençon and at Bagnoles de l’Orne. Bagnoles de l’Orne in the Forêt d’Andaines has sophisticated shops, a large tennis complex, good restaurants, lake and gardens plus a trotting stadium, casino and large swimming pool. There is a lovely lake at Ferté Macé of about 28 hectares with a beach, pedalos, rowing boats, restaurant and miniature golf. There are several châteaux and gardens in the surrounding area that are well worth a visit including Sassy, Château du Bourg-Saint Leonard, Château D’O, Pontecoulant, Vendeuvre and of course Carrouges. Haras du Pin - 25km - is one of France’s National Studs. There are guided tours round the house and stables and throughout the summer there are presentations of stallions and carriages accompanied by music which are held every week. Trotting and show jumping are held regularly at the stadium in Alençon. The Normandy Beaches and World War II cemeteries are within easy reach. Le Val is close to most of the channel ports: Caen - 1.5 hours, Cherbourg and Le Havre - 2.5 hours and Roscoff and Calais are both 4.5 hours. There is a good train service from Argentan to Paris which takes about two hours. |
