Local area

Villers Bocage - 10 minutes - is the local small town where there is a good choice of restaurants, supermarkets and a swimming pool.

Normandy or 'Normandie' in French, is a super region. Being only 2-3 hours drive from Paris makes it an easy place to visit and takes you out into the countryside of France.

Much of the history of France can be discovered in this area of immense natural beauty.

The D-day beaches span 50 miles along the Normandy coastline - you will find many memorials and museums giving great insight to the planning and eventual liberation of France and other occupied territories

Close by is the town of Bayeux, where you will see the Tapestry dating from 1067 and featuring another great historic moment in time - that of William the Conqueror invading England in 1066.

Mont St Michel is a must to visit - being one of France's most visited sights, the abbey dates back to 966.

Not forgetting the Gardens of Claude Monet, visit the Lily ponds and his house - from here you can also admire the picturesque port of Honfleur, where Monet and other impressionist painters gained much of their inspiration.

There is also Rouen to visit, which sits on the banks of the Seine and is where Joan of Arc met her untimely death.

Deauville is well known for it's film festival in September.

Many a Parisian owns a weekend property here - hence the high prices.

Deauville hosts the racehorse yearling sales each year. In fact Normandy is the equivalent of Newmarket in England or Kentucky in the U.S.A. All the best bloodlines, all the best studs can be found in Normandy.

On your journey you cannot fail to see another animal - the brown and white speckled Norman cow, usually seen munching in the many orchards. They produce the super milk and cream used to make such famous cheeses as Camembert and Pont L'Eveque as well as cream from Isigny.

Visit a French market while in Normandy and experience the French way of life - you will be able to buy apples (from those orchards), calvados - an apple brandy, cider, crepes, fruit, vegetables and even the odd rabbit or two.

Most towns and villages have a weekly market - selling local produce - fresh vegetables, fruit, cheeses, meat and fish.

Along the coast are many seafood markets to sample as well.

If you have a week spare it will not be wasted in Normandy - however do try to keep at least 3 days available in order to see the main sights.
