Local area Port en Bassin is situated midway between the British, American and Canadian beaches of the Normandy landings of WWll. Beaches - Omaha Beach is 9km away to the west with the towns of Vierville sur Mer, St Laurent sur Mer and Coleville sur Mer. Walks - several dedicated walks around the town are detailed in the information file in the cottage. It is possible to walk a coastal route eastwards to Longue sur Mer and the WWll German gun batteries. Golf - the 27-hole Omaha Beach Golf course is a few minutes from the cottage on the edge of the town and has a fine restaurant with delicious lunchtime and evening menus. Fishing - sea fishing from the harbour and beaches, local trout rivers and coarse fishing are all within easy travelling distances. Shops - there are various gift shops to browse, a traditional clothes shop, patisseries, boulangeries, supermarkets as well as the chandlers and fishing tackle shop. There are two banks with ATMs. Restaurants - Port en Bessin has at least six restaurants plus cafés and bars, many serving the locally caught scallops, mussles, oysters and the traditional Marmite (a fish casserole). Fresh fish - sold daily in the covered market on the harbour. Car boot sales - from spring to autumn there are countless of these ‘vide greniers’ across the area. Local market days: Port en Bessin - Sunday, Bayeux - Wednesday and Saturday, Courseulles aur Mer - Tuesday and Friday, Grandchamp Maisy - Tuesday and Saturday. Many of these markets have cooked food stalls. |
