Accommodation

The chai, or wine store, that originally constituted half of the house has been professionally converted to provide:

A large living area with new kitchenette.

DVD player, video recorders and tapes are available in the sitting area and indoor games and packs of cards are provided.
Free use of our internet access is available by arrangement.

Ensuite bedroom with double bed.

An ensuite twin bedroom having a door opening onto a private north facing terrace.
Put-up beds are available in this room, and another in the sitting area so that a total of four children could be accommodated.

A boiler room houses washing machine, ironing facilities and freezer.

The apartment is entered through beautiful oak doors under a stone archway, outside of which there is a south facing terrace which looks out onto the grange where the horses sleep the hot summer days away.

On your arrival you will find milk, coffee, tea, orange squash, fresh bread and butter and jam plus a bottle of local wine waiting for you. Towels for the bedroom and pool plus bed linen and basic toilet essentials are also provided. The beds will be made.

Outside

A Bertin sits in its own 20 acres of meadow and woodland through which visitors are welcome to wander or simply to lie back in the grass and watch the buzzards.

Swimming Pool: the new free-form pool is 1.2 metres deep and is entered by Roman steps which are ideal for the smaller children to sit and splash about on. The pool is shared with the owners.

Garden torches and candles are available for those late nights in the garden.

Badminton and Boules sets are also available.

On the premises you will meet our two dogs (Prim the English Pointer and Tag the Border Collie) and riding horses (Moon and Pretzel). The horses are gentle and appreciate a fuss and the dogs love to go across the fields for a walk, but if you have an allergy or are nervous or otherwise unhappy about the presence of the dogs, please be sure to say. It is no trouble at all to ensure that they do not intrude on your stay with us. We genuinely appreciate that not everyone is happy in the presence of dogs, particularly large ones. The horses are exercised most evenings when it's cooler and any competent rider (under 11 stone) is welcome to join me at no charge.

Local area

Although not sited in a village (the bastide village of Beaumarches is 2.6 miles away) there are numerous small but beautiful medieval Gascony villages within a few short miles that are worthy of a walk round, perhaps to see the churches and views, or to sit for a coffee or lunch at their restaurants.

The Gers is a very lightly populated department with some of the cleanest air in Europe. Motoring is a joy on the deserted country lanes and walking or cycling even more so.

The food served in the local restaurants is very good and even in the high season there are no crowds or queues and always a seat at a restaurant close by.

There are music festivals throughout the summer in many of our local towns. Without doubt the most prestigious is the two week long international jazz festival at Marciac, followed by the country and western festival at Mirande

Tennis - there is a fine tennis court in the village next to the bar which can be rented by the hour.

Golf - our nearest 18 hole golf course, Chateau de Pallanne, is 15 minutes away and there is also golf at Bagneres de Bigorre, a one hour drive from the house.

Swimming - both the local small towns of Plaisance and Marciac have delightful, clean and inexpensive outdoor public swimming pools open during the summer.

Watersports - the lake at Marciac - 10 minutes - has facilities for pedalos during the summer months.

Our nearest airport is Pau, a 1 hour 15 minutes drive away and Toulouse is a 2 hours drive.

The closest seaside resort is the beautiful town of Biarritz, two hours on normally traffic-free roads.
