Local area and activities The Limousin region offers peace and quiet and untamed scenery that is just perfect for hikers, ramblers, riders, anglers and canoeists. The region's wild landscapes with lakes and gorges cutting through deep forest and granite foothills of France's backbone, the Massif Central, will appeal to all lovers of the great outdoors. The city of Limoges is located about 70 minutes north of the cottage with direct fights to many UK airports. The city of Brive and its new airport is around the same time south of the cottage with direct flights to London City Airport. The towns of Tulle and Uzerche are around a 30 minute drive away. Nearby Pompadour is home to the National Horse Stud and stages regular events at its racecourse. Local villages Turenne is perched on a rocky pinnacle overlooking the town below and has an 11th Century Chateau. The Red Stoned Village of Collanges-la-Rouge has Romanesque turrets and fine residences grouped around the bell-tower. Curemonte has three châteaux and has had quite a few famous inhabitants, including Francois 1st, Pope Clement 7th and novelist Colette who spent the difficult year of 1940 there. St. Robert is a charming medieval village with a Romanesque church and summer music festival. Segur-le-Chateau has many half- timbered houses along both banks of the river Auvezere. At Monédières is a free flight Paragliding school offering courses and beginner’s sessions. Parc Zoologique et Paysager du Reynou. D’ARBRE en ARBRE is a series of tree-top assault courses for children and adults alike, on the edge of the stunning Lake Vassiviere. Peyrat-Le-Chateau has a museum dedicated to the Resistance. Parc Bellevue - Parc d'attraction is a 1970's style adventure amusement park with water slides, bouncy castles for all ages, go-karting and a petting zoo. An amusement park as they were before electronics. Ideal for the under 12s. Parc Animalier des Monts de Guéret. This park will let you observe the behaviour of wolves at close range from purpose built observation towers. Futuroscope, A park filled with exhibits celebrating science and technology. It specialises in catering to all ages, it has exhibits simulating everything from skydiving to space walking. The Auvergn Volcanic Parc and Volcania. The emblematic pyramid of Puy Mary proudly oversees the Cantalien volcano which is the largest volcano in Europe. The Puy-de-Dome is a mix of extinct volcanoes, thick forest, rivers, lakes and mountains. During World War II, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane, on the outskirts of Limoges, was destroyed and its people were massacred by the Nazis. The cars are still on the street exactly where they were left, furniture still in place in the houses that survived the fires. Truly a unique memorial and one that genuinely evokes the meaning of one of the awful events of that time. Throughout the summer and on specific dates at other times of year, our local markets showcase the wealth and diversity of the Corrèze's farm products and arts and crafts. |
