Outside One of the fascinating aspects to the property is the four south facing garden terraces, accessed from the fourth floor, that rise up the hillside from roof level. The first of these terraces has been landscaped for use by visitors, and consists of a large patio area and small semi-tropical garden. The terrace benefits from all day sun, and has stunning views over the village and mountains. The garden is equipped with lights for evening use, sun loungers and an outside table and chairs seating eight. Please note: younger children should not be left unsupervised in the garden. Access is via a small number of steep stone steps, and the terraces above the patio area are not fenced. |

Local area The village of Le Tech is situated in the southernmost valley in France and has a popular café, open all year round, that serves very good value set meals. There is also a grocery shop/charcuterie, post office, play area with table tennis, swings and boules space, and a municipal tennis court, all within 3 minutes walk of the house. The village is only 6km from the border with Spain, and within easy reach of Perpignan, Figueres and Barcelona. From Le Tech the valley runs up to the lovely medieval walled town of Prats De Mollo (6km). Here there are bakeries, shops, a small supermarket, an outdoor swimming pool and a number of restaurants. The artistic town of Ceret, with its well known art gallery, shops, supermarket, restaurants and well known Saturday morning market, is a 30 minute drive down the valley. The Mediterranean beach resorts of Argeles, Canet and St Cyprien, together with the picturesque old fishing port of Collioure are all within an easy drive of the house, and have a wide range of family activities. The colourful and exotic city of Perpignan is one hour’s drive away, or there is a bus service from Le Tech. This city is full of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and music clubs. There are many interesting festivals, and the old quarter has some fascinating Catalan architecture, multi-cultural shops and food markets. Activities The area offers a huge range of outdoor pursuits. There is a tremendous range of walking options for all abilities either directly from the village, or from a number of nearby marked Pyrenean routes. There is also a large range of biking options, from small mountain roads and tracks to more adventurous mountain routes. Skiing - there is the small and friendly Spanish family resort of Vallter 2000 (1 hour) where all equipment can be hired. There is also the larger French resort of Font Romeu, which has a wide range of different slopes, equipment hire and lessons (2 hour drive). Golf - there are also a number of possibilities. St Cyprien (1 hour) has an 18 and 9 hole course. There are 9 hole courses at Amélie-Les-Bains (30 minutes) and Camprodon. Over the border into Spain the Torremirona Golf Club has 18 holes, and the Peralada Golf Club has both an 18 and 9 hole course. However the most famous local golf course, reportedly popular with French government ministers, is probably the Falgos Golf and Spa Resort at St Laurant de Cerdans (20 minutes), with 18 taxing holes in dramatic scenery. There are numerous local swimming options, with open air swimming pools at Prats de Mollo and Montferrer, and an indoor pool at Amélie-Les-Bains. Alternatively there is a fabulous natural swimming hole 10 minutes drive from the house. Horse riding – there are 3 riding stables in St Laurans de Cerdans offering hirelings and guided tours through the mountains. Fishing – the local trout fishing is reportedly excellent. Passes can be bought very cheaply at the tabac in Prats-de-Mollo, Arles sur Tech or Amélie-Les-Bains. Thermal spas – there are spas at Boulou, Amélie-Les-Bains and Prats-de-Mollo. The Little Yellow Train, running from Villefranche-de-Conflent right up onto the Cerdagne plain, near Andorra, at Font Romeu is a narrow gauge cog railway running along a spectacular route through the mountains, taking about 90 minutes. The Tropical Garden at Ponteilla, just outside Perpignan, is delightful. The owners have tried to make it an educational experience to show children bananas, coffee and chocolate plants, as well as providing a treat for horticulturists. Families will also enjoy the wild animal park near St Cyprien. |
